The World Health Organization (WHO) has revealed the number of confirmed cases of monkeypox worldwide. The data is provided by RIA Novosti.
Thus, the number of infections since the beginning of the year in 50 countries of the world has exceeded 3.4 thousand. One infected person has died. Most infected in European countries (86 percent). At the same time, in countries where it was recently discovered, it is mainly men who have had homosexual contacts who fall ill.
Earlier, the WHO emergency committee assessed the situation with the spread of monkeypox. The agency declared the "emergency" nature of the outbreak and called for "intensive response efforts" to "control the further spread" of the infection. At the same time, the organization announced that the phenomenon is not a global emergency.
Monkeypox is similar to smallpox, which was officially declared eradicated in 1980. Most infected people recover within a few weeks, but sometimes complications can be fatal.
